Spring 2008 Internship Testimonials

Magan Le
Fosforus, Media Internship
Austin, TX
"They're a b2b, full-service agency who does a lot of work in direct/email marketing and online banners. I get to use DoubleClick, pulling reports and trafficking ads, as well as miscellaneous other things. I love it!"

Kristin Carwell
GSD&M Idea City, Media Internship
Austin, TX
"I've had six advertising and journalism internships total, and I can easily say that this has been my best experience so far. My team at Idea City is great to work for, and encourages me to learn and help other departments with projects. So although I am officially a media buying intern, I've also been able to help with media planning, sports event promotions, interactive, and marketplace planning. I typically help with assignments on BMW, World Market, MasterCard, and AARP by going through TV and radio media buys and ensuring everything ran properly and there are no discrepancies. Some of my more interesting and recent projects have included: helping plan and observe a focus group for our current multi-million dollar new business pitch, researching a new media market in New York for MasterCard, and researching motorcycle speed racing as a sports promotion. Idea City tries to have fun events as well - we had a band come in to play for us during SXSW which I really enjoyed!"

Jocelyn Lai
LatinWorks Marketing, Media Internship
Austin, TX
"At LatinWorks, I do not do "intern work." I am presented with projects Media Associates work on. My supervisor has really allowed me to take ownership of several things. I wrote media plans for St. Edward's University, ESPN Deportes Radio. I helped with new business pitches and was responsible for Competitive Analyses. Everything I do at LatinWorks allows me to dig deep into my pockets and offer everything I have. And, everything I offer is seriously considered. I always feel as an integral part of the entire planning processes."

Bart Kieschnick
Texas Student Media, Account Executive
Austin, Texas
"I have gotten great experience in Media Sales for a daily print publication, television & radio broadcast, and online advertising. Maintaining an extensive client list, prospecting for new business, and working within deadlines are some of the challenges that have made my experience worthwhile."

Christina Chan
SicolaMartin, Account Services Internship
Austin, Texas
"I love my Account Service Internship at SicolaMartin. This is my first advertising internship and I really learned a lot. My mentor let's me do many of the things that she would have to do on a daily basis. One of the coolest things I was able to be a part of was helping our agency get a new client! It was really exciting to be part of and watch the pitching process. And now, to be able to see the concepting stages and watch everything come to life. I would recommend interning at SicolaMartin to anyone!"

Kendra Newton
Cartis Group,
Account Services Assistant
Austin, TX
"I am currently interning for a branding agency in Austin called Cartis Group as an Account Services Intern. This is my second time working for this agency. Although I am titled as “account services,” the company is small so I have been able to work as account planning, media, traffic along with account services.

Keep in mind that Cartis Group is a “branding agency” and not an advertising agency. Most advertising agencies work to enhance the “brand” of a company, but Cartis Group works with clients to create and improve their brand. In this internship, you will learn the Cartis Group process of how to find a brand. Branding uses a mix of marketing, design and advertising to give clients a new identity, and will teach you strategy that you have not learned at UT.

I highly recommend working at Cartis Group. I have been able to manage two of my own clients, work directly with the CEO and account director on various projects, and get in-depth experience in how the business operates. I have learned the value of client communications and how to talk with them, how to work with traffic deadlines and how to work with a creative team.

This experience has been very valuable because, unlike many other internships, there is no busy work and no downtime. I try to work as many hours during the week so I can contribute to the team effort.
